Welcome to Class 12OP
The class teacher is Mrs Owen-Philips.
All the Year 3 and 4 classes work closely together to ensure your child receives the best possible learning experiences. We follow a 2 year cycle of planning with a wonderful, exciting range of topics and activities. We place a lot of importance on developing the children's thinking skills and their ability to improve their own work, whilst giving them the basic skills from which they can begin to fully reach their potential as they grow and move into the top end of the school.
Below is a brief outline of the topics and texts we cover in Year 3 and 4. We would love it if you could talk to your child about their topic and find out more about what they've been learning.
Autumn: Our main topic for this term is ‘Habitats’ and we will also be looking at the book ‘I see a kookaburra’ by Steve Jenkins and Robin Page – with a focus on persuasive writing.
The children have decided on a name for their topic this term and have decided to call it ‘Fantastic Habitats’
The school year will focus on a mastery of maths. Each term we will be covering a range of mathematical skills. Mass, mental calculations, money, fractions & time. We also use our times tables regularly, your child will benefit greatly from knowing them as well as possible and should practice them regularly, this will help them tremendously in class.
Autumn: The genre ‘writing to persuade’ and also linked closely with our book. The children will also be working on their basic skills each week.
Spring: Diary Writing – (recounts)
We wrote Victorian diary’s to recount a day in the life of either a chimney sweep, scullery maid, cotton mill worker, matchstick maker.
Summer: Story writing - creative
We wrote our own stories based on our topic of ‘Brazil’ – we included Alan Peat sentences and writing power features.
Autumn: During this topic we studied plants and animals and their habitats. We classified animals and researched their characteristics. We looked at plants and what they need in order to grow. We carried out an investigation to observe the effects of light on plant growth. In our Forest school area we also research the types of trees we could find, took measurements, bark rubbing and observations.
Spring: We identify a selection of materials/organisms, some living and some non-living. We discussed and wrote what all living things do: MRS GREN
M – Move
R – Respire (breathe)
S – Senses
G – Grow
R – Reproduce
E – Excrete
We sorted man-made and natural materials. We completed a flow map to show the process of cotton production which linked in with our Victorian topic.
Summer: World of Water
We have looked at a range of freshwater and saltwater habitats and what lives there. To link in with our topic of Brazil we have compared and contrasted the Amazon River and the River Dee. We will also be completing a river study during our visit to Wepre Park. We have carried out an experiment to find out if freshwater and saltwater mix and used this knowledge to explain what happens when rivers flow into the sea or when it rains out at sea.
Following the draft release of the new curriculum more traditional types of homework won't be set by the class teacher. We will trial a period of time where we encourage activities at home that further develop your relationship with your child; such as nature walks, shape hunts, working with money and keeping fit. We are always happy to suggest ideas and activities that you can do with your child, so don't be afraid to ask.
P.E takes place every Friday so please could you ensure your child has a full P.E kit with them in school.
We have a weekly library visit so please return your books to school each week.
